What is Pakistan Super League
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league contested during February and March of every year by five franchises representing different cities in Pakistan. The league was founded in Lahore on 9 September 2015 with five teams and now comprises six teams. The current champion is Islamabad United, who won the title by defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the final of the third season on 25 March 2018.
The PSL is a brainchild of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi, who also serves as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of PSL. The first edition of the tournament was held in 2016 in UAE due to security reasons. In 2017, most matches were played at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore while some matches were played in Dubai and Sharjah as well.
The third edition was completely held in Pakistan with all 34 matches taking place across 4 venues; Gaddafi Stadium, Karachi’s National Stadium, Lahore’s Qaddafi Stadium and Multan Cricket Stadium respectively. As far as franchise structure is concerned, each team must have 16 players with a maximum limit of 10 foreign players and minimum limit four under 19 years old Pakistani cricketers. A draft system is used to determine which player goes to which team; however marquee players are directly signed up by respective franchises without going into draft process e.g., Shahid Afridi & Brendon McCullum for Karachi Kings & Darren Sammy for Peshawar Zalmi etcetera.
. Every team must include two emerging U19 Pakistani cricketers from their region/city as part of their 16-player squad i.e., one player from rest of Pakistan excluding Balochistan & Sindh (for Karachi Kings), one player from Sindh & Punjab (for Lahore Qalandars), one player from Punjab only (for Islamabad United), one player from KP only (for Peshawar Zalmi) and finally two players from Balochistan only (for Quetta Gladiators). These requirements ensure that every PSL team has local flavor thereby promoting talent development within country’s vast pool of cricketing resources instead relying too much on international stars like other T20 leagues around world do.
(citation needed • edit) In order to ensure competitive balance among all 6 franchises while giving each an opportunity to win title over course next few years, PCB has devised following squad composition rules:
