The region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans. Under pressure from settlers moving into the area in search of gold and furs, treaties were signed that allowed for gradual encroachment into Native American territory; however tensions between Native Americans and settlers remained high for many years.
In 1850 alone there were 28 separate armed confrontations between miners and members of seven different Indian tribes. In 1910 construction began on what would become one second largest hotel in North America at that time – Glacier Park Lodge. This development signaled an influx tourism which has remained strong since then due to Glacier’s varied scenery and proximity to other popular tourist destinations such as Banff National Park and Yellowstone National Park.
Today approximately two million people visit Glacier each year with most visitors accessing the park through its eastern entrances near Kalispell or via Going-to-the-Sun Road which traverses glacier’s width from east to west offering spectacular views along its 50 miles (80 km) length..
