What Does Ut Student Government Do?

The University of Texas at Austin’s student government, more commonly known as UT Student Government (UTSG), is the official voice of the university’s student body. Its mission is to “represent and empower students through an inclusive and effective process that advocates for their interests and promotes a sense of community.” In order to achieve its mission, UTSG strives to provide students with resources, support, and opportunities; advocate on behalf of students at the local, state, and national level; and create programming and initiatives that enhance the student experience.

UTSG is led by a team of elected officials who serve one-year terms in office. The executive branch consists of the President, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Communications Officer, and eight Senators-at-Large. The legislative branch consists of the Speaker of the House (who presides over meetings of the House of Representatives), four House Representatives from each academic college/school/unit on campus (for a total of 40 representatives), two senators from each residential college/hall (for a total of 16 senators), and three graduate school senators.

The judicial branch consists solely of the Supreme Court Justices who are tasked with interpreting UTSG statutes & regulations. In addition to its elected officials, UTSG has several standing committees & commissions (e.g., Budget Review Commission) as well as ad hoc committees & task forces (e.g., Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force) that work on specific issues or projects throughout the year. Each committee & commission is chaired by a member of UTSG’s executive branch or legislative branch with input from relevant stakeholders (e.g., faculty advisors).

All members of UTSG – including elected officials, committee chairs & members, commissioners, etc.
