What is the History of Babusar Top?
Babusar Top is a high mountain pass in the northernmost part of Pakistan. The pass connects the Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with Gilgit-Baltistan region. Babusar Top is 4,173 metres (13,691 ft) above sea level.
It is the highest point on the Karakoram Highway. The name Babusar is derived from a Balti word meaning “Father of Clouds”. The top of the pass is frequently enveloped in mist and clouds, making it seem like an ocean of whitecaps.
Babusar Top has been used as a trade route between Pakistan and China for centuries. In more recent history, it was an important link between British India and Tibet during the days of the Raj. The British built a fort at Babusar Top to house troops that were guarding this strategic border crossing.
The fort was abandoned after Tibet gained independence from China in 1911 and Britain withdrew from India in 1947. Today, Babusar Top is once again becoming an important trade route between Pakistan and China as they build the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This $62 billion project includes upgrading the Karakoram Highway to accommodate heavy traffic and constructing new highways and railways connecting Pakistan’s Arabian Sea ports with Western China.
