What is Roman Reign Religion?
The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful empires in the world for centuries. During that time, the official religion of the empire was Christianity. However, there were many other religions practiced throughout the empire, including Judaism and Islam.
Christianity became the dominant religion of the Roman Empire after Emperor Constantine conversion to Christianity in 312 AD. Prior to this, Rome had been a pagan empire with many different gods and goddesses worshipped by its citizens. Christianity offered a monotheistic belief system that appealed to many people at that time.
As Christianity spread throughout the empire, it began to take on different forms. One major split occurred between the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church in 1054 AD. This division is still evident today with both churches having their own separate followers.
Roman Catholicism remained strong in Western Europe while Eastern Orthodoxy took root in Byzantium (present-day Turkey) and Slavic countries such as Russia, Bulgaria and Romania. Both branches of Christianity continued to grow during medieval times until the Protestant Reformation in 1517 AD when Martin Luther challenged some of the practices of Catholicism . This led to a further split within Christianity with some people following Luther’s new teachings (Protestants) while others remained loyal to Rome ( Catholics).
Today, there are over 1 billion Catholics worldwide , making it one of largest religion sin existence . The pope , who resides in Vatican City , is seen as the leader of this faith . Protestants make up another large group within Christianity with an estimated 800 million followers worldwide .
While Judaism only has around 14 million adherents , Islam has grown significantly over recent years and now has around 1.6 billion followers globally .
