Guccio Gucci

Guccio Gucci (March 26, 1881 – January 2, 1953) was an Italian fashion designer and founder of the eponymous high-end fashion label. He is widely credited with popularizing the distinguished look of modern luxury travel luggage. A native of Florence, Gucci worked in London and Paris before returning to Italy to open a shop in 1921.

By the 1930s, Gucci was well-established as a successful leather goods purveyor, with stores in Rome and Florence. His son Aldo joined the business in 1933, followed by daughters Bianca and Vera in 1940. The family eventually expanded their operation to include branches throughout Italy and worldwide.

In 1947, Gucci debuted his now-iconic bamboo-handled handbag; other timeless classics followed suit, including the Jackie O bag and the Horsebit loafer. The company continued to prosper under Aldo’s leadership after Guccio’s death in 1953; however, it experienced turmoil during the 1980s due to family infighting over control of the business. Maurizio della Valle took charge in 1983 and helped restore some stability; he oversaw a major expansion that included flagship stores in New York City and Beverly Hills.

Today, Gucci remains one of fashion’s most revered brands, known for its luxurious materials, impeccable craftsmanship, and modern sensibility.
