Why is Education an Issue in Pakistan?

Pakistan is a country located in southern Asia. The region now straddling the border of present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan is one of the most torn regions of the world. In Pakistan, education is an issue because:

1) There are not enough schools. According to Al Jazeera, Pakistan has around 20,000 primary schools for a population of over 180 million people. This means that there are only enough schools for about 10 percent of Pakistani children.

2) A lack of qualified teachers. In order to be a teacher in Pakistan, one must have a teaching license from the provincial government. However, only two percent of teachers in Pakistan have this qualification, according to UNESCO.

3) Gender disparities in education. In 2012, UNESCO reported that only 39 percent of Pakistani women were literate compared to 64 percent of Pakistani men. This disparity is due to cultural norms which dictate that girls should stay home and help with household chores instead of going to school.

4) Lack of resources and infrastructure. Many schools in Pakistan do not have basic resources such as textbooks, desks or even electricity.
