Nawaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician who served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2013 to 2017. He was previously the Prime Minister from 1990 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1999. Sharif was born in Lahore into one of Pakistan’s wealthiest families.

He attended Oxford University, where he became involved in student politics. After returning to Pakistan, he joined his family’s business and entered politics. He rose to prominence after leading his party to victory in the 1977 general election, but was ousted from power during the military coup of 1977.

Sharif’s second spell as Prime Minister ended in 1999 when General Pervez Musharraf staged a military coup and overthrew his government. Sharif returned to Pakistan from exile in 2008 and led his party to victory in the 2013 general election. As Prime Minister, Sharif faced challenges including energy shortages, terrorism, and an economy that was struggling to recover from recession.

His government initiated an ambitious programme of economic reform, with privatisation of some state-owned enterprises and deregulation of others. However, this agenda ran into opposition both within and outside Parliament, leading Nawaz Sharif to ultimately resign as Prime Minister in July 2017 amid corruption allegations against him and his family members..
