Do the Gucci Family Still Own Gucci?
In 1921, Guccio Gucci founded the House of Gucci in Florence, Italy. The company initially sold leather goods before expanding into other luxury items like clothing, jewelry and perfume. For generations, the Gucci family maintained ownership of the company, but that changed in 2015 when French conglomerate Kering (formerly known as PPR) purchased a majority stake in the business.
Although Kering owns most of Gucci now, members of the Gucci family still hold a small percentage of shares and play an important role in the company’s operations. MaurizioGucci, son of AldoGucci , who was one of three brothers who ranthecompany fordecades after their father’s deathin 1953 , sold his sharesin 1993 . In 1999 , Maurizio wasshotand killed outside his Milan apartment by a hitman hired by his ex-wife PatriziaReggiani , who is currently servinga 29 – year prison sentence for orchestratingthe murder .
In 2013 , François-HenriPinault , chairman and CEOofKering , announcedthat FrancescaGucci – great granddaughterof founderGuccioGucci – had been appointedas one of two vice presidents onKering’s boardof directors . As such , she becameone of only four people within the Pinault familyto have a seat on this powerfulboard that oversees someof France’sbiggest luxury brands (including Yves Saint Laurentand Alexander McQueen) . While it’snot known exactly how much stake membersofthe Guccifamily still ownin the companythat bares their name , it is clear that they continue to be involved with and invested inthe brand’s success even nearly 100 yearsafter its inception .
