Why is Baltit Fort Famous?

Baltit Fort is a large ancient fort located in the Hunza valley, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. The fort was built on a strategic site at the crossroads of the ancient Silk Route and the Karakoram Highway. It has been occupied by many different empires and dynasties over the centuries, and has served as a royal residence, a military outpost, and a place of refuge.

Today, it is one of Pakistan’s most popular tourist destinations. The Baltit Fort is believed to have been built around 600 years ago, making it one of the oldest forts in Asia. It was constructed by the Mirs of Hunza, who were rulers of the Hunza Valley during that time.

The fort was originally made from wood and mud, but was later rebuilt using stone when the Mirs came into contact with Chinese architects. The Baltit Fort has an irregular shape, with three levels that decrease in size as they go up. The first level is circular, while the second and third levels are rectangular.

There are 37 rooms on all three levels combined. The front gate leads into a large courtyard that contains a well and stables for horses. A narrow staircase leads up to the second level where there is a small mosque.

The third level contains the royal apartments which have views of both Mount Rakaposhi and Mount Ulter peak . The Baltit Fort went through many changes during its long history. It was captured by various invaders including Alexander’s army ,the Arabs ,Turks , Mongols ,Tibetans ,Mughals & finally by British .

After 1947 when Pakistan become independent country then Pakistani government did some repair work & opened this historical place for public view . In 1997 UNESCO declared Baltit Fort as world Heritage site .
