Hunza is Wakhi – a language
The people of Hunza are ethnically related to other groups in the area, such as the Tibetans, Kashmiris, Afghans and Turkic peoples. They speak different dialects of Wakhi – a language from the Dardic group within Indo-Aryan languages. However, since most people in Hunza can also speak Balti, Urdu and English, Wakhi is not generally used as a written language.
Wakhi literature consists mostly of oral epics, poems and songs. One example is the epic poem Shina Badrudin – also known as “The Ballad of Badruddin” – which tells the story of a 16th century ruler of Hunza. The valley is home to several small villages, including Bakkhot, Ganish Village and Nagar.
