The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium, an outdoor stadium located adjacent to downtown Houston which opened in 2002.
The franchise began play in 2002 as an expansion team after Houston’s previous NFL franchise, the Houston Oilers, relocated to Nashville, Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans. TheTexans’ first season was generally regarded as a massive disappointment; however they did manage to win their first-ever game against the Dallas Cowboys on September 8th. They finished with a 4–12 record—tied for 3rd worst in franchise history.
In 2003, the Texans improved slightly to 5–11 but still had one of the league’s worst records. Despite this improvement, head coach Dom Capers was fired and replaced by assistant head coach Gary Kubiak before the 2004 season even began. Under Kubiak’s leadership, the Texans posted two winning seasons in 2006 and 2009; however they failed to make the playoffs both times.
After another disappointing 2010 campaign that saw them finish 6-10, Kubiak was once again fired and replaced by interim head coach Wade Phillips. Phillips led the team to an impressive 11-5 record in his only year as head coach; however they were soundly defeated by Baltimore Ravens 20-13 in their Wild Card matchup. In 2012, former Penn State University head coach Bill O’Brien took over asHouston’s new head coach.
O’Brien had success early onin his tenure; he ledthe Texans to back-to-back 9-7 seasons while also winning AFC South titlesin 2015 and 2016 respectively.. However since then things have gone downhill for O’Brienandthe Texans:they missed outon playoffs berthsin 2017and 2018 despite havingtalented rostersboth yearsand won just 11 total games combined over those two seasons.
. As of right now it remainsto be seen if O’Brien can turn things aroundforHouston or if he will ultimately become another casualtyof owner Bob McNair’s impatience with losing..
Have the Texans Ever Had a Winning Season? Since their inception in 2002, the Houston Texans have had 11 winning seasons. Their first winning season came in their very next year of 2003 when they went 10-6. They made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history that year as a Wild Card team, but lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.
The Texans would make the playoffs three more times over the next decade (2011-2012, 2015), but failed to win a game each time. Finally, in 2018, the Texans finally won a playoff game, defeating the Buffalo Bills 22-13. They eventually lost in the Divisional Round to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots again.
