Shalhoub’s parents met while studying at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon and married shortly after graduating. His father worked as a grocer in Green Bay while his mother taught second grade. When Tony was ten years old, his family moved to Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, where he attended Whitefish Bay High School.
He then enrolled at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he studied theater and psychology. He later earned a master’s degree in fine arts from Yale University. Shalhoub began his acting career on stage, appearing in several productions during the 1980s and 1990s.
He made his screen debut in 1992 with a small role in the film Alive, and went on to appear in such films as Big Night (1996), The Siege (1998), Galaxy Quest (1999), Spy Kids (2001), The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001), 1408 (2007), Men In Black 3 (2012) ,and Pain & Gain(2013). On television, he has had starring roles on the series Monk (2002-2009) for which he won three Golden Globe Awards and four Emmy Awards; Wings (1995-1997); Nero Wolfe (2001); and The Affair(2014-present).
